Oral Deaf Pride?
Sunday December 14, 2003
Oral Deaf Pride? - Seems like whenever I hear about deaf pride, it is always associated with knowing sign language. Is there such a thing as oral deaf pride? Can deaf people who are oral and do not use sign language by choice, be proud of being deaf? I know that for myself, I did not develop "deaf pride" until I became part of the deaf community and began using sign language for real. Can an oral deaf person want to be "just like" hearing people, and STILL have deaf pride?

I have 2 oral deaf teenagers. My daughter 17 is very proud of herself of being deaf and being oral. Why does she have to be able to sign in or be involved in the Deaf community in order to have pride in herself. Just because she can fit in the hearing world does not mean she is trying to be hearing or trying to pretend she is not deaf. She has made this t-shirt, I am deaf, I am oral, what of it. People in the Deaf community need to accept everyone.
