Sign for 18 Year Old?

Sunday December 14, 2003
Sign for 18 year old? - I am a teacher in a community college, and this sememster a young woman signed into my class in developmental English. She is quite hard of hearing, or maybe "Deaf." I don't know. But she doesn't seem to follow my speech unless I make a very concerted effort...which is fine, I try to. But of course most of the students in the class don't understand her, nor she them. Her mother, whom I've talked to, says that she does not want her daughter to learn sign language. The daughter is 18, very intelligent, very motivated, talented, and has a great attitude. But she seems very isolated to me. I can see that the other students don't relate to her, nor she to them.

Every state in US has a “commission for deaf and hard of hearing” or resource center that covers every county. Sometimes called Div. of Deaf & Hard of Hearing, Vocational Rehabiliation counselors for deaf, where this lady could meet other, use libraries, learn to sign. She needs to learn to sign, and have a good audiologist for devices, hearing aids, etc.
Your college disability resource office may know of local resources. Signing does not interfere with learning, its been proven to help learning, her mother is old school and fearful of something non existant. ASLPRO.com is a good video sign dictionary, she needs a notetaker too, under ADA.
