Still More Relay Service Problems

Wednesday May 12, 2004
Two new problems with the relay services I became aware of this week: 1) Now deaf-owned businesses are getting hit with the scam calls - and no surprise. Relay services can be used both ways, for a "deaf" person to call a hearing person, and for a "hearing" person to call a deaf person. 2) The Post-Gazette reported that a hearing girl received a threatening relay call. Even though relay services must remain confidential by law, surely there is room for some compromise? Could a button be installed for use by relay operators to begin recording or capturing call-related data that can later be used by the police, when it becomes obvious that a call is not a normal, non-threatening call? I fear that someday a death might result because of this confidentiality, no-recording rule.

Relay operators have a forum where they discuss the issues.

I had a relay message service relay a message of a person who was stalking me. I never found out who the person was because the relay service will not tell me.
