Relay Services and Job Searching
Monday May 17, 2004
When you have made calls to prospective employers as part of your job search, have you encountered things like:
"This is a business."
"What is this??"
I find that employers are uncomfortable and unfamiliar with the relay services. The operators give them a quick canned explanation of what a relay service is, but the prospective employer is already uncomfortable. What can a deaf job seeker say to the prospective employer? How can relay services make prospective employers more comfortable? The problem is that the relay services announce themselves, instead of just saying "hello, this is...." and that immediately raises the employer's suspicions and discomfort level.
