Poll: Did You Grow Up Oral But Now Use Sign?

Saturday July 10, 2004
New poll on the forum: Did you grow up oral but now use sign language? With so many of today's parents focusing on raising their deaf children to be "oral," (yes, many do use sign language but it seems to me that the vast majority are opting for the oral method based on media articles), I wonder what is the likelihood that this next generation will become sign language users. I find it ironic that at the same time that oral education for deaf children is popular, sign language is enjoying a peak of popularity. I myself grew up oral but now rely on sign language, because exposure to the deaf community plus the loss of the rest of my hearing resulted in increased sign language dependence.
