Doonesbury Insults Disabled People

Tuesday January 11, 2005
I just submitted the following comment to the folks at Doonesbury.com regarding the current Doonesbury comic strip:

The current Doonesbury storyline involving BD is a disgrace to people with disabilities. In today's strip, BD puts pressure on Zonker to find a job and reminds Zonker that he is missing a leg. Pardon me, but the rest of him seems quite physically capable of holding a job. Unless Garry Trudeau makes it crystal clear that BD is totally incapacitated and therefore incapable of working, he is doing the disability community a major disservice by treating BD's character this way.

Although the character's disability is not deafness, what if Garry Trudeau had made the BD character deafened by his Iraq experience? A disability is a disability.
