Fitting In?

Wednesday July 6, 2005
Over the past two years Ive experienced a gradual hearing loss which is now moderate in one ear and mild in the other. But I also have an auditory processing problem that has always made it very difficult to process speech and with the added hearing loss (HAs don't help because I am also very sensitive to sounds at the same time) I cant follow any conversation unless I put my full concentration into it and am facing someone so I can watch them as they speak, and hope they speak slowly.

But recently a friend began teaching me a little ASL (she doesn't know a whole lot). In ASL I found a medium through which I can easily communicate. For some reason the auditory processing problem doesn't affect my ability to use sign (probably because it is visual and not auditory). I love it and am learning as much as I can as quickly as I can on my own.

Would I ever be accepted by Deaf people who use ASL?
