One Way to Increase Interpreter Supply
Saturday September 23, 2006
Baylor University in Texas has come up with a way to easily increase the supply of interpreters, as reported in this story from the Baylor Lariat. (They mistakenly refer to Video Relay Service as Visual Relay Service, incidentially). What Baylor has done is pure common sense - they created a minor in interpreting that ANY student can take. To ensure that students develop competency in sign, the minor requires four levels of sign language training. This enables the students to take (and hopefully pass) the interpreter certification tests.

What Baylor is doing is not new for Waco, Texas. McLennan Community College in Waco has had an Interpreter Training Program in place for many years. I am a 2004 honors graduate of this program and one of several MCC trained interpreters working in Central Texas.
