Blog Post of the Week: Julie Hochgesang on ASL

Thursday October 5, 2006
Julie has written a blog post, "What's Going on Here?" that could have just as easily been titled, "What is ASL?" She addresses openly the fact that ASL is used by a wide variety of people, both deaf and hearing; therefore, there is no such thing as "pure" ASL. She is right when she says ASL is a living language, and no one segment of the deaf/hoh community can claim ownership of it.

Supposing no one segment of the deaf/hoh community can claim ownership of ASL, then deaf children of deaf parents are not the real owners of ASL, is that what you and Julie are arguing about?
