Jane Fernandes has been terminated as president-designate of Gallaudet University. Read the details on Ridorlive.com. The announcement went out at about 5:30 pm today. Actually, you can read the news on just about any deaf blog at deafread.com. The deaf blog community is exploding right now with the news.

Here is a sentence from the announcement from the Board of Trustees: "The Board believes that it is in the best interests of the University to terminate Dr. Fernandes from the incoming President’s position."

This victory would not have been possible without the tireless efforts of the deaf blog community, which saw tremendous growth during the protest. Kudos especially to Ridor, Elizabeth (MishkaZena), Elisa (Elisawrites.com), and Tayler Mayer. They led the way.

(1) Lynda says:

Why do you consider the ousting of Jane Fernandes as a victory? That students believe they have the right to dictate the actions of the administration at Gallaudet astounds me.

(2) Richard Roehm says:

I see Jane as the “Abe Lincoln” martyr. She worked to liberate the deaf communities from the grips of dependence only to be shot down by the dependency confederates.
