Can Deaf People Work in Captioning Industry?
Tuesday October 31, 2006
An About visitor asked, "Can deaf and hard of hearing folks do closed captioning jobs, or do you need your hearing for this?" My answer was "You do have to be able to hear I believe, for actual captioning, but captioning companies do hire deaf and hard of hearing people to do other, related jobs. I know of a deaf woman who works as an caption proofreader at one company. Other deaf work in marketing of captioning services. You get the idea."
In addition, I know that there are some deaf people who actually own captioning companies, such as the Communication Works of the Deaf. Of course they hire hearing people to do the actual work.

I caption my own movies. All that you need when you’re a Deaf person is a script. Then you just fill in the obvious blanks and go back and put in the rest. It’s not too hard.
Our agency captions web videos. We have the equipment and technology for that. And we have deafies captioning the videos too.
Davideo Productions is a Deaf-owned company that provides captioning services in English and Spanish.
