Captioned News on the Web

Monday December 11, 2006
Many people still don't know that you can see captioned news on the web, courtesy of CNN and AOL.

Here is the code for linking to the captioned news on the web, which can be copied and pasted into a web page. Deaf websites should put this code on their sites to encourage people to watch the captioned news online, because supporting AOL/CNN efforts to provide captioned news online may encourage other web news broadcasters to caption too. Captioning is not required on the internet the way it is on television.

The code:

query=channel%3A%22AOL%20News%22%20distributor%3A%22CNN%22%20&resultsnum=20"
type="application/x-shockwave-flash" width="390" height="100"></embed>

The result:

i have tried so many times to watch them captioned but i never seem to be able to - they re always not captioned, even when I pick “preferences - caption when available” — what do i do? maybe i have to be a member of AOL? Please advise, I would love to watch captioned videos.

When you click on a selected video, you will see a web page open that has the video. To the lower right of the video screen is a button that says “cc.” If you don’t see captions, click that button. The videos play in Windows Media Player.

Boult’s comment makes me wonder if perhaps different video formats are being served up depending on what type of browser/platform you’re using. I’m on a PowerBook and don’t see a “cc” button and the videos are Quicktime not WMV. Which I don’t really get because Macs can play WMV too just fine. Hmm …

Different formats are served depending on your platform (Mac or PC). As far as I can tell, the captioned CNN news clips on AOL Video only show captions when using a Windows PC and the latest version of Windows Media Player. Mac users get an uncaptioned QuickTime version. But even if you could play the video with Windows Media for Mac or Flip4Mac, it wouldn’t show the captions. It would be great if AOL offered QuickTime captions as well. Come on AOL, it’s not hard to do!

Yeah… AOL’s captioning doesn’t work on Mac, which is rather frustrating. And strange, because as far as I can tell, it would be fairly easy to convert the captions to QuickTime’s transcript format to display on Macs…
