as a certified presenter for the ASL-based Sign With Your Baby program, i think it’s important to note that not all baby sign language programs and products are truly ASL based. some are based on home-made or made-up signs and are being passed off as American Sign Language. i think it’s disrespectful and should be debunked for what it is.

I can’t agree more! Why teach a dumbed down and incorrect version of sign? You wouldn’t teach a spoken language like that. It doesn’t matter that babies can’t make the more difficult signs. They also can’t say the more complex words when they start to speak either. As they get older they will sign more clearly, and you can understand their version of signs just like you can understand your child’s version of speech.
