About.com Visitor Inquiry: Wants to Work with Hearing Impaired Warfighters

Monday June 11, 2007
An About visitor asked:
I am a Cadet in the Air Force ROTC program at the University of Arizona. I also am taking classes in Sign Language and Interpreter training. The deaf studies program at the U of A focuses on deaf children but I am interested in a career with deaf adults or recently hearing impaired adults who may be returning from the war or something of that nature. No one has really been able to help me find a career that i could do while in the air force that deals with deaf adults and i was just wondering if you had any ideas.

I referred the visitor to the article on Careers for Hearing People in Deafness, but wonder if anyone has any better ideas? Are there any hearing loss professionals who actually specialize in helping recently returned warfighters?

Today in Anaheim, a disabled veterans expo takes place and we’ll be there. We will be educating people on dealing with hearing and vision loss from battle at the expo.

Lots of people losing their hearing in battle and we even offer an $18 HIFI earplugs that’s good for battleground use.

I’m in the ITP @ Cincinnati State. Once you graduate working through an agency is a good choice because you can pick and choose you assignments. You simply notify them that you’ll be on leave and thats it. But a big issue is interps that specialize in psyc. Men coming home deaf after war could use some psyc help i’m sure. Just a few ideas! Good Luck!
