A Deaf Community Experience: Uninvited

Friday October 26, 2007
Uninvited. What does that mean to the deaf community? The term is clearly defined in an excellent essay by DeafDC.com blogger, Teresa Blankmeyer Burke. (Please note the u in Burke. No relationship to your guide). Her definition: it means that after signing up to attend an event (e.g., a conference), you are told you can not attend because the event can not meet your accessibility needs.

Has this happened to you? How can you avoid it happening? Is it possible to check with conference organizers prior to registration, about accessibility? If organizers of an event say you can't come because they can't afford interpreters or CART, how do you handle it?
