A Coda's Tale

Friday December 28, 2007
The Guardian has an interview with an adult child of deaf parents - a coda - in its Saturday, December 29, 2007 edition. It is a cute tale, filled with experiences codas around the world can identify with, as well as the sad side of things (the deafness separated her family from other family members). There is also a mention of Coda International.

Question: The Deaf community refers to deaf children of deaf parents as "DoDs," which stands for Deaf of Deaf. Can the term "DoD" also apply to adopted deaf children with deaf parents? Or is there another cultural term used by the deaf community? Posts your answers on the forum.

(1) RoB says:

I had a friend while growing up who was a CODA, and his two siblings were disabled as well. He had such a hard time being the family interpreter and it was a real struggle. However, he was one of the most mature and responsible out of all my friends. He had to deal with paying bills and Dr. visits for his siblings at a very young age.
