I needed to confirm this was a relay problem and not a text versus video issue, so I made the same call via a video relay service. Exactly the same thing happened. However, this time, the family member was able to pick up the phone quickly enough and we were able to have our conversation through video relay service. They said they got my message, which was "This is Jamie Berke. I'm not a !?* telemarketer!"
We discussed the problem, and it turns out that the do-not-call list blocks 800 number type calls. Since the relay service is a national relay service, the system thinks that a relay service call is a telemarketing call! To confirm that this is a problem unique to relay service calls, I asked if hearing family members got the same recording and had the same problem. They said no, hearing family members do not get this recording or have the same problem.
This problem should be simple enough to fix; the Federal government needs to program the numbers of all the relay service providers into the software as "allowed" numbers so that it does not block relay service calls.

Actually, it has nothing to do with the federal do-not-call list. It’s a call blocker which is an option that’s added to your telephone service. Embarq calls it a privacy ID. For more information see here: http://tinyurl.com/3pb6b8
I see. If it is a call blocker, how come hearing family members have no problem making calls? I was told that the hearing family members do not get that privacy director recording.
It could be an Embarq-type service activated by the local phone company, usually on request by the consumer.
Or it could be the “anonymous call block”, which stops people who mask their phone numbers from getting through.
This is activated by people who have Call ID service on their phones, so that the ID device displays the number calling.
Telemarketers usually mask their numbers, so this anonymous call block is effective at stopping some telemarketers. It also stops people who mask their phone numbers to keep their numbers private, however. These people can press buttons to unmask their number on a one-time basis in order to get through. The local phone company will have this information in their directory.
Hello. I am so sorry that you have had to experience this. I really am. I am a hearing individual who gets calls from relay interpreters (mainly through Sorenson) all the time, and it is not blocked. I am on the Do Not Call List.
It has to do with their individual company. Even if you were on the Do-Not-Call List, it wouldn’t be blocked, they just wouldn’t be allowed to call you and it would be shown in their system.
Try calling another person with the relay system. Does that work?
Yes, I had to take my privacy call blocker off my phone as it blocked relay calls that I wanted to receive. Relay calls in my state show up on the caller ID as UNKNOWN CALLER, and is automatically blocked.
Actually, I’ve had the same problem and usually its people who have blocked or restricted numbers. I never figured out why but I always had to tell my friends later to not hang up on me every time I call on the relay because they think it’s a telemarkers. It’s frustrating.
This is definitely NOT a Federal Do Not Call list issue. The comments by Jennie and Dianrez are spot on, it’s an option offered by the individual’s phone service provider.
