Welcome, Las Vegas Charter School of the Deaf

Thursday April 24, 2008
This fall, a new charter school for the deaf opens in Las Vegas, according to the Las Vegas Sun. It is a bilingual school, as reported:
The new school for them will offer “bilingual-bicultural education,” a model followed by many of the nation’s top schools for the deaf. Teachers are fluent in American Sign Language, and students also learn to read and write in English.
The new school will start off small, renting two classrooms. Eventually they hope to grow large enough to buy a building. Keep up with news on the Las Vegas Charter School of the Deaf at their website.

I’m the one that helped them win the grant for the first one they did. But their knives on my back subsequently has caused me to focus my grantwriting elsewhere.

Kudos! We need more charter schools of the Deaf in this country to serve dual languages education. I am SICK and TIRED with the bureaucracy of the state schools for the deaf that has been detrimental to our deaf children in the today’s education society.

Proud Parent of a Deaf Charter School!

I grew up in Las Vegas and there was a good deaf community there with activities for deaf kids. Though it has been a while so I don’t know how much has changed.

People who live there don’t really gamble. Rather, vast majority of them work in the gaming industry. It’s the tourists that does the gambling.

I grew up in Las Vegas and there’s still a strong deaf community here…deaf club (LVCD) as well as clubs for bowling and gambling (LVBCD & LVGCD) as well as strong NAD (should called NVAD instead, not to be confused with National’s NAD!!) are present in Las Vegas. In fact, Las Vegas host annual nationwide bowling tournament for the deaf in New Orleans Hotel.

There are school with classrooms for deaf in every grade levels in elementary, middle and high schools. Elementary is abit different than before, we usually have one school that host deaf classrooms for each grade but now they split into two different schools, one goes for oral and whatever it is called while others go to LVCSD.

You will be surprised… we have annual deaf day picnics, deaf day at Wet N’ Wild (waterpark) and many involved with Lions Club and Sertoma where deaf host Sertoma in annual St. Patrick Parade. We also established two deaf camps (Signshine & DEAFinity Youth) at Lake Tahoe where deaf children in Nevada can attend and so forth.
