A Deaf Senior Prom

Sunday May 18, 2008
The San Diego Union-Tribune has an article about a senior prom for deaf students, by deaf students. Apparently this is a trend, because the article mentions another deaf prom in Los Angeles. It sure sounds like they had a good time. I never had a senior prom experience, but it wasn't because I could not get a date. I was already in college during what should have been my senior year of high school.

this is not new, or a new thing..

or not even a trent

deaf schools across the US always had a prom

this is sad for deaf kids in mainstreamed schools, think the football quarterback will ask the deaf girl with a cochlear implant, a wire sticking out to be his date for prom night ?

sadly.. no.

I’m proud of San Diego for taking this step! Congrats to the people behind this prom who helped to make sure this event took place in San Diego! It shows what the mainstream programs can do if they can coordinate events together and give the Deaf students what they want/need.

Thank you for your kind words, Jared.

Midwest Guy,

For clarification purposes, this prom was for all the students in mainstreamed programs throughout Southern California. Yes, deaf schools throughout the states host proms but they are exclusively for their students only. They do not include students from mainstreamed programs unless the students from the deaf schools invite them as their guests.

Hope this makes things clear for you.

It was a smashing success and am very proud of the Deaf community in San DIego!
