Blogs of Interest

Saturday May 24, 2008
Here are the blogs of interest for the week of May 18 to May 24.
  • Deaf Models - Candy writes a long blog posting on deaf models, including a tale of what happened to one deaf aspiring model she knew. It is a well researched post, and there are links to several (attractive) deaf models.
  • Ushers and Waardenburgs - DianRez writes about her experience with Usher Syndrome, and her own son's growing up with Waardenburg.
  • HOH Character on Desperate Housewives - Robert Mason alerts us to the fact that next season's Desperate Housewives will have a hard of hearing character.
  • The Haircut - Gage's mother tells of how when she took her son for a haircut, she got the "I'm sorry" from a hairstylist. (As in, I'm sorry your kid is deaf).
  • Bilingualism - Ayala has some hard points to make about ASL-English bilingualism. Is it bilingualism?
  • Friendly Neighborhood? - A SayWhatClub entry about the pain of being late deafened and missing out on casual neighborly talk. (Guide note: After I got my CI, I was a bit surprised to discover how much casual talk hearing people make. I wasn't aware, for example, of just how much chitchat takes place in the elevator!)
  • Issue of the Week: NTID Decides to Keep Bell Name on Dorm, Change Plaque (and the Plaque has been removed pending a change). This decision (later withdrawn by Hurwitz, see below) by NTID (whose president is deaf) upset many in the deaf community because Bell has been associated with Eugenics (he did not want deaf people to reproduce). This issue was covered by:
  • Kenyan Sign Language - Erickson Young, who joined the Peace Corps, demonstrates some Kenyan Sign Language.
  • Equilibrium Video - the ASL-CI blog posted the short film about a bilateral CI user that was part of the documentary Through Deaf Eyes.
  • Nebraska School for the Deaf - 10th Anniversary of Closing - Rita does her part to preserve deaf heritage, sharing six captioned old videos of the long since closed Nebraska School for the Deaf. Video quality is not that good because the camera used was old, but this one is included because of its value to deaf heritage.
  • Life with a Deaf Cat - A Costa Rican describes how they came to have a deaf cat, and how the cat acts. It is funny!
