Deafened by the Mumps

Friday August 1, 2008
AllAfrica.com has a nice article on a young man in Uganda who was deafened by the mumps. (The article does not say with certainty that it is Uganda). Not many people know that you can become deaf from the mumps. Were you deafened by the mumps?

(1) Rob G. says:

I lost my hearing when I was about 5. One of the things in my medical file is a letter from a doctor who suspected that my hearing loss was caused by the mumps.

Fast forward 35 years later.

One of things I had to do before I started at this local college was to get immunized. I had my blood titers checked out of interest to see what immunities I had. Another medical report mentioned something about the MMR (Measles, Mumps, Rubella) vaccine, but nothing about my having it.

The report showed I did have the mumps but not rubella. That indicated that I never had the MMR vaccine. So, I had to go ahead and get the MMR immunizations including a tetanus booster.

I’m not a doctor so I cant answer for certainty but from what I understand/have learned: No you cant regain your hearing from deafness by Mumps.
My Boyfriend who is 30 lost his hearing in 1 ear when he was 3 due to Mumps. The reason why he cannot have it “fixed” is because what happened was there is so much swelling with Mumps that the nerves to his ear were crushed and blood was lost to them so they are now dead.
What I understand is the reason for most if not all deafness associated with mumps.
You should definitly go see your Dr tho and ask questions so that they can do some tests.
