Deaf 20 Year Old Testing Naida Hearing Aid
Saturday September 6, 2008
Phonak is doing some creative marketing on YouTube, posting a video series that follows a deaf 20 year old as she tries out the Naida hearing aid. According to the video, she had not gotten enough benefit from other hearing aids until she tried the Naida. The video is captioned; some deaf people may be offended by one segment where the girl's parents are quoted as saying they were determined their daughter not use sign language as she grew up.

I’m offended. What a waste of time and money. I really don’t understand why deaf people bother with hearing aids! Just get borgized! I don’t care if that word is stigmatized or not; I accept that fact and oh how glad I am in going BI. The parents got it right, though, sign language belongs to chimps. I really hope she realizes soon that CI is the way to go. Creative marketing or not, it’s a waste. Go get borgized is my personal quote. It’s like trading coals for diamonds.
Cheers!

As a sign language user who uses hearing aids, I think the Naida is great. I’m not sure why the hearing aid companies feel it necessary to exclude sign languages in their videos. It seems a little silly.

I just got my hearing tested again today and am considering Phonak. I personally think that the YouTube commercial just a sales pitch but I did try on a pair of Phonak hearing aids. Too old to get CI. But in the audie’s office, I actually heard the ventilation vents making a low rumble with the Naida model. Hadn’t heard that before! I am hesitant about the way the aids sound otherwise. It was almost like having a really bad sinus infection. It seemed muffled but surprisingly accurate, so the muffled part didn’t make sense. Wondering if it’s just something that I would need to get used to. Unfortunately, I’ve seen other comments about them periodically shutting off and not being as water resistant as they claim. Still on the fence… Plus, it’s almost twice as expensive.
