National Technical Institute for Deaf Enrollment Booms
|
The National Technical Institute for the Deaf, a technical college, is seeing an enrollment boom. I just received a press release from NTID stating that this year's enrollment hit a record high of 1,450, surpassing even the high they had when the children of the rubella baby bulge attended college in the 1980s. In fact, according to this press release, NTID had to hire more professors just to keep up with this enrollment boom.
Just as the press release indicates, this is evidence that given the right kind of environment, deaf college students can and will choose a deaf college over a "hearing" college offering the same or similar education. I am aware that for some deaf college students, attending RIT with support from NTID gives them the best of both worlds - access to RIT for an education while benefiting from the social contact with deaf students at NTID. |

That’s wonderful news!!!
That’s a dream come true for Dr. Robert Frisina who wasn’t happy with Gally in
1968. He’s determined to found NTID to surpass Gally within 20, 30 years.
NTID is still a party program. However, I can understand the attraction of RIT as a private university with a good academic reputation for the Deaf and HoH students already used to the mainstreaming setting. It attracts a good number of C.I. users.
This interesting bit of news brings more questions: how many of these students are transfers from other colleges? How many are transfers from Gallaudet? How are they distributed among the majors and years of study? How many are Deaf and how many are nonsigning deaf and hard of hearing?
To SC, Can you provide source that your comment is based on? I am having difficulty believing that this is what Dr. Robert Frisina intended.
To Mishkazena, Although there always exist few NTID students who party too much, I feel that the programs that NTID offers are excellent. I recognize that different people have different opinions.
To Dianarez, We will have to wait for the next annual report that will answer some or most of your questions. It should come out in January at the earliest (based on my observation when I checked the properties of each PDF file). http://www.ntid.rit.edu/media/annualreport.php is where the annual reports are kept at.

Mishkazena, as a professer of the ultimate party school, yor comment is rich. As today’s technology demands workers with more specialized knowledge, NTID offers a great program in which Deaf students can learn in a supportive environment without barriers. NTID has already proved to be successful, having a high job placement rate (higher than some certain liberal art schools). I think this is wonderful for the NTID/RIT community (only if they could make the weather better!)
I am sorry to have touched a nerve here, though that was never my intention to offend anyone. Yes the liberal arts university is also a party school
I learned this from students who went there. The camradeship between the students were terrific and they partied hard, too. Some transferred to this other university and was disappointed to find the comradeship somewhat different.
Peace
Partying at any college is a characteristic of certain students, not the college. You will also find serious students and goal-oriented kids in both.
NTID and Gallaudet are both about the same in socializing, this from first-hand experience in both. MZ, come on up to Rochester and see for yourself! We’ll throw you a party afterwards!
Oh, I have no doubt that NTID is a great school. Many alumni speak of it fondly, especially the socializing. They don’t find the same comradeship at Gally. I’ve never been there, so I cannot say for myself. I only know what they tell me.
Oh, I’ve partied quite a bit when I was younger. It’s usually a rite of passage for college students
It’s a deal, Dianrez. Looking forward to that!
