Do You Have a Favorite Sign?
Friday December 12, 2008
Do you have a favorite sign in sign language? I have always liked the sign for "cool," which is one of the first signs I learned. I liked it because it gave me a way to communicate via sign that I thought something was "cool." What is your favorite sign, and why?

Comments
I like “horrible” and “stupid”.
As is in:
My signing is *flicks fingers*. I feel so *hits head*
Jamie,
Could you be more specific about your sign for “cool”?
How you sign “cool”? Lexicalized fingerspelling emphasize on movement and hand position for your “cool” sign?
I want to make sure that you are not signing “cool” related to weather. Smile!
The real difference between signs for “cool” within weather and “cool” slang term.

My favourite sign is ‘why?’ I haven’t been signing all that long so this may change over time. I have new friends who are deaf and that’s why I’m learning to sign.
My students always like the sign for “sea turtle” (don’t know why). I’ve always liked sing (the way I learned it is h-handshape circling out from the corner of the mouth) and Heaven (my kids like that one too)!
i like the sign “ugly”! don’t know why, i just like the way it looks.
I like the sign for sexual intercourse. Or if I am interpreting and someone uses the expletive to express themselves I sometimes use it. But I think you are supposed to spell it or initialize it to be proper as when signing “damn” with the initial D going down and away from you.
My favorite sign is “Peacock”! I love it! It makes me happy!
I don’t know the sign for peacock and I never saw that sign for sea turtle, but, funny, my fave is turtle. One hand covers the other naturally and the little head bobs out from under. Also, cracker…it actually comes from the practice in England of crumbling one’s crackers at one’s elbow! Ha. Pregnant, football and wrestling all look basically alike but for their different movements. I really like the classifier for a crowd all going or coming to a place.
I’ve just passed level 2 and my absolute favourite sigs are, Fantastic and Innocent. My tutor laughs everytime i sign it as i have a smirk on my face. It’s a sign i’ll never forget i don’t think……lol
My favorite signs are a tie… sea turtle and possum. I’m a big fan of iconic signs.
It’s what got me through the not so exciting parts of ASL (grammar and structure, which I now love).
I love the sign for “Remember”. I use it a lot with my daughter… she loves it! Personally, I like “finish”. lol
CynthiaK…..my favorite sign is “sea turtle” too! It’s just so cute!!! =)
My favourite sign is “bright” especially when it is done in song. The movement is so expansive and really depicts that the area is filled with brightness.
I like to sign “all” and “forever” but I don’t know the sign for sea turtle. Can you guys describe it for me?
Love the “what’s up” greeting sign and “don’t know” sigh…both of which I use with regularity…because I love running into people I can be comfortable enough to use a ’slang’ sign with….and generally I don’t really know that much about things!!:)
I like the sign “finish” and ” i don’t know”. i use it regularly. Plus, I add my own style to it too.
Missy- The sign for sea turtle is you put your left hand on top of your right one and wriggle your thumbs…try it it’s ace!
i like the word meet u tomorrow as its uttered by our proff. at the end of their classes in our university
I have always like the sign for “shy” bc it looks like the sign for something else if you do it incorrectly. I have also been know for signing the phrase “what happened” often enough for it to become modified as my sign name. My students have always been fond of the sign “no clue” (it’s the F handshape shaken across your forehead)
I like the sign for “Trinity”… the three hand that disappears behind your other hand and reappears up the front with one. I also like when “Forever” is signed being a signifier of time into the future as well as into the past. “Predict” is another one I like! I like how it feels to sign “cost”, “steal” & “lion” and the letter “J”. Of course, “sea turtle”, “turtle”, are cute to see! I also like how “escape” looks! Okay, back to work now!!!
I love the sign for awkward; I am hearing and I adore the sign for awkward because I feel like that’s one of the terms that has described me for a long time, the hand shape is the number 3 on both your rigt and left hand palm down pushing up and down or like wrapping some string on one thumb from another thumb. I also adore the sign for embarassed/nervous because I get really nervous and embarassed in front of my ASL teacher because he’s rather good looking and I don’t want to mess up his language in front of him.
How do you sign ‘date’? As in let’s go out on a date? Thanks so much!
