Deaf Photographer Discriminated Against

From Jamie Berke, About.com GuideNovember 29, 2009

Follow me on:

I was fixing broken links tonight and when fixing the article on Job Search Discrimination, I came across this October 2009 press release in the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC) press release database: The Picture People, Inc. Harassed and Discharged Deaf Employee. It tells about how a deaf photographer, Jessica Chrysler, was harassed and discriminated against. The EEOC filed a lawsuit on her behalf.

The EEOC gets many requests all the time from people who want the EEOC to take their case. With limited resources, the EEOC has to be very selective about whose cases they will accept for bringing suit. If they chose Ms. Chrysler's case, then her case must have been very clearcut and serious. (The EEOC also filed suit in September 2009 in another case involving deaf applicants who were not hired because of their deafness).

I have one of the good examples with my real life interview to share…
Before an interview, I decide to not ask for sign language interpreters, by doing in black and white written communication during an interview to proven boss how well we talk…
20 minutes later, I quickly feel funny but continue with our written conversation.
Guess what boss asked me… “Not you mind if you take this as continue education on READ LIP…”
Our interview is over, walk off… I not am going to deal with this boss!
