Homemade Sign for Twitter

From Jamie Berke, About.com GuideApril 10, 2010

Follow me on:

Yesterday my boyfriend showed me a homemade sign he had come up with for "Twitter." It is simple yet effective. Make the sign alphabet letter "T," then move the index finger up and down repeatedly to mimic a bird chirping.

Start with the T

Do you have a homemade sign to share? If there is enough interest, I will create a page where you can upload pictures and instructions for your own homemade signs!

That works, however, it doesn’t have to be a T to start with. Just sign the way a bird chip (in other signs, do the ‘no’ but with no middle finger AND mouth morpheme should be like making a silent whistle. :-)

What about Facebook? Does a sign exist for that one too?

In New York City, we simply touch the top of the “T” with the other hand.

No thanks. That is SEE. I prefer the bird sign. Common sense dictates that tweets came from birds so hence, the usage of bird is perfect.

Yes, I have seen that one too here in the Washington D.C. area. For Facebook, most people sign F-B or I have seen FACE- BOOK. The latter tends to be used among ASL students vs. the deaf community.

Love your site and all the info!

Ridor, toss common sense out the window for now and at least GIVE someone credit for some creativity. It matters not if it’s SEE, ASL, pidgin, whateverthesignever. Sometimes common sense doesn’t even figure into a sign. It just happens.

The pointing finger is wiggled some, thus imitating a bird in a way. Twitter users often tweet, so it’s a near-perfect technological update to a sign.

In Toronto I have see the sign for Facebook as FB and also by using the right hand of the sign for book placed on the side of the face and moved in the same way as the sign for book.
