Deaf Man on Path to Being a Certified Deaf Interpreter

By , About.com Guide   June 20, 2010

Follow me on:

I almost never come across news stories about certified deaf interpreters, or deaf people planning to become certified deaf interpreters. Today I came across this one about a deaf man who just completed an interpreter preparation program. What is a certified deaf interpreter? It basically means a deaf interpreter who often works with a hearing interpreter to translate for a deaf person whose needs mean that a traditional interpreter is not enough.

There are about 106 Certified Deaf Interpreters all over the country. It can be found at http://www.rid.org – run a search in finding an interpreter/member on right column. The specific link will lead you to the list of 106 CDIs.

A Deaf interpreter also can work alone when working intralingually– e.g. American Sign Language to Tactile American Sign Language or any of MCE to ASL.

Good to see that there are news articles about DI/CDIs in mainstreamed newspapers.
