Video: Captions on the Radio

By , About.com Guide   July 29, 2010

Follow me on:

Just saw this video from  National Public Radio about captioned radio. It shows how it works in prototypes (but does not explain how the captions are created.)  I don't know if I would want one in the car, but I would love to have one I could take to the pool.

I think this is a wonderful idea. It would be nice if they could have something that will tell you when a emergency vehicle is approaching and which direction it will be coming from.

On election night in November 2008..I attended the event at our NPR radio station. There were about 25-30 people there…20 of them hearing impaired community/ Cart provider/interpreters.
I was impressed by the promise of the technology…I am able to understand most NPR programming if I turn volume loud enough. Other type of radio is more difficult to understand. Captioning for the driver would not work while moving due to distractions. We were asked about preferences for cost/display/usage.
