Deaf in the Civil War

By April 17, 2011

Follow me on:

While doing some maintenance work on the About.com Deafness site, I stumbled across this little gem: U.S. Civil War Military Service by deaf people.  Coincidentally, this year is the 150th anniversary of the Civil War.  Some deaf and hard of hearing people had actually served in the Union and Confederate armies. One person had pretended to be hearing to get into the army.  Two deaf soldiers on opposing sides actually ran into each other after one of them was captured.
