Remember the Deafblind Triplets?

Sunday July 9, 2006
A few years ago, I did a popular article on deafblind triplet daughters. The parents recently contacted me to make me aware of a new website they have set up to raise funds for hiring intervenors for their daughters. They are in a race against time to help their deafblind daughters make sense of the world with the help of professional intervenors.

Until I saw the Hookers' website (http://www.notbysightfund.org/), I did not understand what the term intervenor meant. I had seen it before, but thought it was a foreign word for interpreter. Now I understand what intervenor means, and why it is so important for the Hookers to be able to have intervenors for their daughters.

Perhaps people in the deaf community would like to raise funds to help the Hookers' daughters? Maybe deaf organizations, and schools/classes for the deaf could hold fundraising events?

A grant for the money would be wonderful. Maybe a grant writer or someone that has excellent writing skills could embark upon this important, urgent issue. After all the government has multiple grants for a multitude of other items, therefore, the money is probably already available.
