Gallaudet University in Washington, D.C. is the only liberal arts college for deaf and hard of hearing students in the world. With over a hundred years behind it, it has a long history in the deaf community and is responsible for producing many of the leaders in the deaf and hard of hearing community. Gallaudet was thrust into the international spotlight briefly in 1988, when students there led a protest that resulted in the University's first deaf president.

Gallaudet has long been aware of the crucial role it plays in the lives of deaf and hard of hearing people everywhere. Accordingly, the University has evolved to the point where it is much more than just a place to learn. This feature looks at what else Gallaudet has to offer besides a college education. Indeed, The University's web site is so huge that it has its own search engine.

On the campus of Gallaudet, there is a conference center/hotel, the Kellogg Conference Center, known as the GUKCC. Designed to meet the needs of hearing impaired conference attendees, it also houses several departments at Gallaudet. It has meeting rooms, hotel rooms, and eating facilities. The Gallaudet shuttle bus also stops conveniently in front of the center.

In recognition of its expanding international role, Gallaudet has a Center for Global Education. There you will find information on studying abroad and an international internship program. There is also an apparently popular international pen-pal section.

Plus, Gallaudet houses the Gallaudet University Press, publisher of books on deafness and sign language, and home to the revered American Annals of the Deafand the respected Sign Language Studies. You can get answers to difficult questions at the Info to Go, and check out research publications at the Gallaudet Research Institute.
