As one of the largest states in the United States, California is home to several schools for the deaf. that use sign language, or sign language plus speech, for instruction.

CSD Fremont

It is no surprise that Fremont, California is one of the most popular places in the United States for deaf people to live. It is home to the Fremont campus of the California School for the Deaf (CSD)

CSD Fremont has an interesting history; the school pre-dates the end of slavery. CSD moved around, from San Francisco in the 1860s to Berkeley in the 1870s to Fremont in the 1980s.

The school has a student newsletter, The California News (begun in 1885). As befits a school with such a long history, CSD has a large alumni association, complete with its own newsletter. Once a year, CSD marks the anniversary of the historic Deaf President Now movement with its own march around Fremont.

CSD Riverside

Another campus of the California School for the Deaf is in Riverside. The Riverside school has its own newsletter, the Cubby News. Like the Fremont campus, CSD Riverside has its own alumni association.

Marlton School

The Marlton School is a public day school for deaf students in kindergarten through 12th grade within the Los Angeles Unified School District. The school has a bilingual spirit, using American Sign Language and English to teach its deaf (and hearing) students. Marlton welcomes the hearing siblings of its deaf students, through the fifth grade. In addition, Marlton offers education and training for students with severe disabilities.

Tripod Educational Model School

The Tripod program in cooperation with the Burbank Unified School District enrolls deaf and hearing students together, providing a model for "reverse mainstreaming." Services are offered via a center-program like model, from parent/infant through elementary school.
