Argentine Sign Language

Web sites in Argentina offer information on Argentine Sign Language. LsArgentina.com has information on Argentine sign language, covering multiple topics including:

  • Grammar structure of Argentine Sign Language
  • The Argentine manual alphabet
  • The history of the language of Argentina signs

Instruction in Argentine Sign Language is available through places such as:

  • Instituto Platense de Lengua de Señas Argentina - This translates loosely to Institute Platense de Lengua de Señas Argentina. It offers sign language courses taught by native speakers of Argentine sign language.
  • Sitiodesordos.com also has a page listing multiple places to learn sign language in Argentina.

Argentine Deaf Culture

There is a national magazine for the deaf, "El Mundo de Los Sordos."

National Associations

The Association Argentina de Sordos provides information on:

Sports

Argentina has a national Confederation of Sports of the Deaf (loose translation) that serves as an umbrella organization for several deaf sports associations:

Education

The Oral Institute of Buenos Aires is but one of the several schools for the deaf in Argentina. Other schools for the deaf include the Las lomas oral School for the deaf and the Escuela de Sordos. Several schools are listed on the Colegios page of the website Sitiodesordos. Apparently not that many deaf people in Argentina manage to make it to college. According to an article on discrimination on the website of Sitiodesordos, barely seven percent of deaf Argentines even make itout ofhigh school (from a loose translation of the page).
