Here is how to do the sign language alphabet. I took these pictures myself, and About.com also has a video, How to Sign the Alphabet in ASL.

The letter A looks very similar to a lowercase written letter A. Four fingers down, with the thumb up next to them looking very much like the "tail" of a lowercase written A.
