When getting your child a cochlear implant, you should also make an appointment to get her vaccinated for meningitis. You may not think of that as a step in this process, but it's an important one.

A 2002 Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and Food and Drug Administration (FDA) study found that children with cochlear implants got meningitis more frequently than non-implanted children; a more recent study update further confirmed the increased risk.
