These are the top books about deaf culture that I have read, or that have been recommended by visitors to About.com.
This short little book of anecdotes and cartoons will make you giggle, even though it is a little outdated now.
Recommended by forum member SUMBUNY, who says the book is an "honest representation of people's opinions and experiences."
Recommended by forum members ANIJ21 and TERP21. ANIJ21 says the book allows readers to see that not all deaf people grow up in the same environment and also an insight into the lives of CODAs.
Recommended by forum member ANIJ21, who says the book has deaf people who grew up in deaf homes thinking that hearing people were the ones who were "not normal."
From an About visitor: I read a book "called at home among strangers. even though it talks about several topics regarding the deaf community and education and language , there are some really touching segments that were written by some deaf people I would have to say will bring a tear to your eye."
This book, an anthology of deafness in literature, was recommended by an About forum member who said it was required reading in her ASL class.
I spotted this book at a DeafNation expo, looked it over, and liked what I saw. This is a good book for children to help them learn the basics of deaf culture. I would not recommend it for adults, but do recommend it highly for young children.
