Definition: Were you a solitaire? This is a term that has become part of deaf community vocabulary. Its popular usage was started by bloggers discussing a book, Alone in the Mainstream, about the experience of being the only deaf child in a hearing school environment. The book's author, Dr. Gina Oliva, uses the word "solitaire" to describe socially-deprived deaf children. Bloggers picked up on it and used the term repeatedly to the point it became common usage, and thus worthy of being entered into the glossary.

These bloggers posted commentary on the book, the term "solitaire," and the experiences of solitaires. Commentary was very heavy in response to these blog postings as others chimed in with their own solitaire experiences.
