How to Help Person in Denial?

Sunday August 3, 2003
Got this inquiry:
I've been in a relationship with a hearing impared person for a year. His condition is deteriorating, and he is in denial. I want to educate myself about hearing impairment, and have suggested sign courses for us both for the last 6 months. He has taken no steps to learn to lip read, he has taken no steps to look into signing. He understands me much better when he LOOKS at me, but the truth is, his attention span is very short. Its been a real hurdle for me to overcome the insecurity of not being listened to: repeating things four times kills spontaneous things like: I love you, or jokes, or whatever. When I raise my voice enough to be heard, he tells me not to yell... !

Its an exasperating situation for us both... Any thoughts on how this can work? Any tips or tricks? And has anyone figured out a system for communicating when your riding bikes!!??

My response: I understand what you are going through. It sounds like your significant other is having difficulty accepting the increased hearing loss. Have you tried taking your significant other to meetings of Self Help for Hard of Hearing People, or contacting ALDA, the Association of Late Deafened Adults? SHHH's website is at http://hearingloss.org and http://www.alda.org, respectively.

But I wonder if anyone has any better suggestions? Talk about it on the forum in the thread How to Help Person in Denial?
