Seen DTS Cinema Subtitling System?

From Jamie Berke, About.com GuideApril 11, 2004

Follow me on:

Have you experienced the DTS Cinema Subtitling System? Have you experienced BOTH DTS Cinema Subtitling System and Rear Window Captioning (RWC)? Which do you prefer? Obviously theaters prefer RWC because it is a form of closed captioning that requires you to use a piece of equipment but DTS Cinema Subtitling System is a form of open captioning that is visible only if the captions are projected onto the screen! More information on DTS is on the DTS Online website.

Although the recent proposed movie captioning settlement for the metro Washington, DC area states that the theaters involved will install RWC systems, I hope that the same theaters or other theaters will take a hard look at DTS - CSS or a similar system as an alternative. It is my understanding that 24 theaters in the U.S. are getting DTS - CSS installed. The deaf and hard of hearing community MUST have a commonly-used movie captioning system that does NOT require the viewer to use a piece of equipment, because people in wheelchairs can't use it, people with bifocals can't use it, and deaf kids (my own do!) hate it!

Discuss movie captioning on the forum.
