Accessibility Problem at Reagan National Airport

Wednesday July 7, 2004
My deaf son came within fifteen minutes of missing his flight at National Airport today. At check in we were told to go to gate X. When we got to gate X there was no one at the gate desk. We sat down to wait. Fifteen minutes before boarding time someone came to the gate desk. I decided to double check and showed them the flight ticket. They said wrong gate! Gate changed to gate Y! I had not known because the terminals at the gate desk only displayed the flight number and the flight time. Needless to say I was upset realizing my son could have missed his flight due to lack of visual information! After I got him safely boarded I complained to Jay jay Lavine, a station manager for Usairways. Lavine tried to tell me that deaf people can get special assistance. I firmly told her that that was not the point. A deaf person should be able to fly independently with the help of visual information. Lavine agreed with me and said she would talk to Chris Brown the airport manager about getting the airport gate terminals reprogrammed to show gate number changes and other important information. At this time gate changes are only shown on large hallway monitors outside of the gate, and Lavine admitted that this does not help if you are at the gate itself. No wonder deaf people in other communities have filed lawsuits against airports. My son could have missed his flight.

Update: I have been told by another deaf person that he has had similar problems with Amtrak not providing visual information regarding track changes, and still another told me that he has actually missed flights in the past because of lack of visual information.
