Open Captioned Movie Attendance

Sunday July 11, 2004
It probably was the popularity of the movie itself, but today's screening at the Regal Entertainment UA Bethesda 10 in Bethesda, Maryland of an open captioned version of the third Harry Potter movie was well-attended in my opinion. Following the movie, I asked the box office how many tickets had been sold; the box office salesperson said 43. That obviously included at least a few hearing people that were not members of the deaf community, because on the way to a nearby ice cream shop I spoke to a woman and her two kids that had been at the captioned screening, and it turned out she was hearing and the family was not part of the deaf community. She said the open captions did not bother her at all. So much for the movie theater industry's argument that hearing people won't attend open captioned screenings.
