Friday July 16, 2004
Is cochlear impant better than digital hearing aids? I have a nerve damage which makes me deaf. I dont know much about them and just wondered if they are any good.

(1) Sheila says:

I wore hearing aids for 30 yrs. (age 17-47)and could barely hear garbled noise when people spoke to me. I finally learned sign language and had interpreters at church, college, and training classes at work. In 1995, they no longer helped. My hearing loss was profound, and a cochlear implant was my last resort. I adapted within 6 weeks - 2 months and was hearing without reading lips, listening to music, and using a telephone.

Now in 2008, I have just had my 2nd cochlear implant. I will have the external processor (looks a little like a hearing aid) programmed by the audiologist on 3/12/08 and will begin training that ear to hear again after 30 yrs. of silence. I’m so excited!!!!

With my cochlear implant I can hear the clock tick across the room, my cats meow, sound of rain and birds singing + many more that were never heard when wearing hearing aids. They just amplified sound for me - no clarity of speech. Cochlear implants give you speech back!
