Louisiana School for the Deaf Closes

The string of sex assaults at the Louisiana School for the Deaf finally got to be too much for the state superintendent of education in Louisiana. (The most recent case involved a 16 year old and a six year old). On Tuesday, October 7, 2008 he announced he was closing the school temporarily for an undetermined period of time (one source says it will be for less than a month). During the closure, the school and its operating system will be overhauled.

Well, I’m glad it is not permanent and it does seem like the right step to take. They need to do some serious house-cleaning, and in more than one way!
Yes, Deaf kids need education in a safe place and obviously LSD isn’t doing its job.
What I am afraid is that the Deaf Community will unleash its wrath on the sexually abused Deaf victims. It’s not the fault of these victims that the supervision was lax and it wasn’t their fault that they ended up being sexually abused. I hope the Deaf Community understand this distinction and place the blame where it belongs to: the administration of LSD
I personally think it was irresponsible for you to use the headline “Lousiana School for the Deaf Closes” when it’s only temporary. You could have addded “temporarily” instead of panicking your readers.
That said, there clearly are issues there and I’m glad they’re looking at things and hopefully making the school safer for students.
What does the State Supt knows about Deaf Education, btw? Hysteria at best. Hearing people cleaning up hearing people with new hearing people. RIIIGGGHHTTT. Get more qualified Deaf and Hearing who knows Deaf culture and ASL onboard to lead the school. Kids deserved better.
And there’s another sex scandal brewing at Indiana School for the Deaf. Going to blow up soon, if it hasn’t already.

Last year some of DEAF LSD staff are busted for sex with students or texting dirty language to students. There are some bad deaf people working at deaf school.
Anon, that was an outsider - a deaf youth minister earlier this year. So your claims are made up.
yeah true deaf kids needs to be taking good care!!
I live near LSD and my son participates in their outreach program. There have been multiple incidents perpetrated by students along with deaf and hearing school staff. There was one instance of an outside minister was a perpetrator. Sometimes evil can hear, and sometimes it cannot.
By the way, the outreach program is wonderful for deaf students who are in mainstream schools.

Whats going on at L.S.D? Everything was fine when I was there after I graduated that when EVERYTHING was SCREWED UP! Come on show respect for the school and second home. Stop embarrassing the second home of L.S.D. Get your acts together and improve for the better. Teacher and Dorm Consuler do you your job right and show good morals to students that looking up to you. Student have fun and enjoy school and second home life. Time will fly by. Do things RIGHT from WRONG!
sigh. i agree - the predator can be hearing or deaf or crazy or sick person so.. evil knows no race, size or anything. evil is just evil.
as for indiana school for the deaf, who cares? this site IS ABOUT LSD not ISD so what are you trying to do by stirring it up?
it’s in deaf community - we need more better role models and leaders which would help this kind of situation to decrease. it’s in the administration - they should have done better job of screening staff and teachers plus better in taking action for anything like this…
situations like this - all we can do is to give support to those kids who went through this, pray for no more happenings like this in future and try to improve our deaf community considering it’s pretty small and we should remain unity and strong.

According to a LSD alumni, the seven who were arrested are Deaf. I can identify only two, butI don’t know the others.

thank god it was we dont need to be teaching them anything they dont want to know or about how Dr. Cogswell and Thomas Gallaudets started the deaf culture and community also the first deaf school in america they just need to all leave or get a cochlear implant
I checked the ISD website and it shows that the “Athletic Director” position is being advertised.
I also browsed through the internet to see if there was any mention of the arrest of Bippus but there was nothing. So I am reluctant to believe what I’m hearing.
