Deaf Studies - Little Known College Major
Wednesday November 5, 2008
Deaf Studies is an academic field that seems to be available at few colleges and universities. I only know of a handful of colleges and universities that have Deaf Studies majors and minors available. For example, Gallaudet University's Department of ASL and Deaf Studies offers both undergraduate and graduate degrees in deaf studies. What about other colleges?
Also, I am wondering what type of job a person can get with a degree in deaf studies? Did you get a degree in deaf studies? What kind of career has it led you to have?

Hi — what about Deaf studies online for those working adults and adult who have family and home, unable to move or live in dorm out of state? I have tried to find at least one online college that provide deaf studies for master degree, but I could not locate one. Do you or anyone knows?

I’m currently in the Deaf Studies department at California State University, Northridge. I hope to go on and study sign language linguistics, but there are many options for work with Deaf Studies degree. Other students in my program are going on to careers in education, interpreting or community services. The degree can be a stepping stone to further study, like in my situation. I believe you can visit Gallaudet’s website and for each degree they have a few personal stories of what people are doing post-graduation (at least in the Graduate section they do).
Judy, I would recommend contacting the Deaf Studies department at Gallaudet, and explaining your situation and what you’re hoping to achieve. They might be able to provide you with helpful information!
