Kohl's Reaching Out to Deaf Employees!

From Jamie Berke, About.com GuideApril 11, 2010

Follow me on:

An alert member of the forum discovered that Kohl's department store has closed captioned videos on their jobs site! Lnanaa was poking around Kohl's site and saw the captioned videos.  She was "pretty impressed."

So was I! At a time when so many deaf and hard of hearing people are having difficulty getting hired, it is refreshing to find a company reaching out to potential deaf employees like this.  Check it out for yourself at distribution/, and at campus recruiting .  The video has a simple CC logo at the upper right corner, and when you mouse over it there is an on and off button option for turning the captions on and off. Can videos featuring employees using sign language be far behind?

I haven't been to Kohl's to shop for a long time, but I definitely will have to shop there the next time I go shopping. Such an effort must be rewarded. I just bought a new suit at another store yesterday, but when I'm ready to buy a shirt for it, I'm heading to the Kohl's down the road!

that is interesting I don’t think they are doing that with the intention of reaching deaf people who don’t speak. My daughter went to our local Kohls to apply for a job and they could not have been any more rude or closed minded. They basically told her that they would not and could not even talk to her about a job because she could not hear.

Corporate image does not always equal corporate culture. So don’t believe everything you read or see until you know for yourself

I work for Kohl’s and I didn’t know they were doing that. I was home from school last weekend and working and found out that we did recently hire a Deaf woman. I was excited to work with her because I am a Deaf Education major and we typically don’t have deaf customers or employees in our store. Way to go Kohl’s, maybe you are doing some things right!

I did not realize that Kohls has this CC on their videos . I work at Kohls and have been for the last 16 years. I am their visual display supervisor. My store also set up a Sorenson VP (video phone) So I can make calls when needed. There are 3 other deaf co-workers at my store as well. One is the dock supervisor , one does the ad set and another works on freight. Its a great place to work and everyone is very friendly and includes us in everything. Even the customers know we are deaf and they do not hesitate to ask us for help when needed.

Can you tell Kohl’s to carry more petite clothing? I went to Kohl’s last weekend hoping to find something to buy and had to leave empty-handed because of the limited petite selection and the one shirt I liked did not fit.

I have seen two deaf clerks in the past year at the various Kohls stores I frequent. Perhaps certain managers are different than others but I sincerely believe Kohls is deaf friendly with the hiring process.

I am deaf and was hired for the 2010 Christmas season. I went through the training process (via videos) and there wasn’t any closed captioning…….. I had already informed them of my hearing loss. I have actually had managers make fun of my hearing loss OR give me a “hard time”/”guilt trip?” about not wearing a radio and ear piece. Hello people, I have told you that I have a cochlear implant!!!! I don’t buy for a second that Kohls is deaf friendly…..they have just been sued tooo many times for discriminating against the deaf culture!
