Definition: The auditory nerve is a cluster of nerve fibers carrying sound information between the cochlea and the brain. It teams up with the vestibular nerve that brings balance information to the brain. Combined, they are known as the eighth (8th) cranial nerve.

Cochlear implants work by sending stimulating electrical signals to the auditory nerve. The auditory nerve can then send the signals on to the brain, which interprets the signals as sound.
