Cochlear Implants - Deaf Teenager Against Cochlear Implant

Discussion of an Implanted Teen's Experience

By

Updated June 05, 2009

A deaf teen's cochlear implant (CI) sparked intensive discussion:

"17...profoundly deaf...parents decided to get me CI when i was 3..always hated it but acted like i love it because it made them happy ...and my speech was soo good... hated it so much i tried to take it off when i was 11...got caught...forced to use my speech and hearing thearpy...waste of my time...parents wanted me to get a new one...13...got a new one. i was afraid to say no...

...16, i totally refused...had a fight...i won...they refused to accept my decsion. Now i fully use sign language (SL)...seen so many young kids who got CI has been forced to use their voice...can't understand their parent because their parents refuse...sign. It really makes me so upset!

"both you and your family have taken the wrong stance...should not mean your family should stop signing with you...tell your family you'll wear the CI IF they'll keep signing."
FAIRRAINBOW
"...He BEGGED for CI...always "signed"...isn't a moment that goes by that he doesn't use his voice, and we have never forced him. I'm so sorry for you that you and your parents are on different terms...never cared how we communicated...just wanted to communicate so he wouldn't be frustrated...can see why your parents did what they did, they only wanted the BEST for YOU...life is much easier if a person can hear...speak."
SIGNINGMOMMY
GOFORIT10:"...noise...gives me a huge headache...since i took it off, my family is now signing...happy...great that your son likes it. I am happy that you are willing to communicate with him anyway he wants...But it just when i was little the teacher would take me out of playtime...mad...behind...focused on speech and hearing therapy. Ever since I took them off, I loved hearing silence...caught up with class work...My life is so much better..."
FAIRRAINBOW: "...told your doctor about the headaches? I've never heard of headaches being a problem...glad your family is now signing...
GOFORIT10: "...doctor told me that it is normal. Most people with CI gets headaches because their head aren't used with all the noises...Some don't have headaches..."
"...took a lot of courage for you to express...doing what They thought would be best for you...have your Deaf Culture/peers...best choices for you are the ones you feel most comfortable with...Pain is a signal that something is not quite right..."
BACHMA
"...headaches could be due to your map...parents wanted to give you the best chance...want to give our son every available edge...if he decided to stop speaking and sign, we would too, because...old enough to make his own decisions...talk to your parents...as parents...can forget that they are actually separate people..."
ANYA53
"...not as lucky as you are to get CI as my insurance won't pay...be happy that you can hear...would give anything to be able to hear some...in my job I have a chance to move up but with my hearing loss it prevents...your parents did what was best for you..."
CONINE
"...My fiance had CI when he was 3 and stopped using it when he was 17..."
SMILINSOUL
"19...became best friends with a girl who is hard of hearing (HOH)...does not have a CI but wanted one when she was younger...now she is glad that her parents never got it...still do not really understand why people dont like them..."
JDLUVCOWS
An implanted friend of GOFORIT10 asked why she was not accepted by the deaf. Someone was confused how much benefit GOFORIT10 had gotten. GOFORIT10:"I did hear very well with my CI, but I always secretly turn off...only had the sound on...in speech therapy and...with my parents...could fool my parents into thinking i always had it on...I love the sound of silent...She wants to understand why the deaf community won't accept her. I do accept her, I always tell her to be herself..."
"...as a parent of a 14 year old who has had her CI for over 12 years...extremely doubtful of your claim that you have been fooling your parents...glad that you feel you have made a choice that is best for you. However, do you honestly believe that if your parents had made the opposite choice...that you really would have a real choice today to get a CI and to develop oral language skills?...agree with Signingmommy. the CI has indeed made my daughter's life easier."
RICKAOB
"i turn it on...in speech therapy and when i am with my parents. but when i am not...i have it off. My life is so much better without CI...There are many people I know who don't like CI. I am not Oral. I strongly use ASL. I cannot speak very good...great if CI helps your kid have a easier life. But it doesnt help me have easier life...There are people who have NO Problem living in a hearing world with no hearing and no speech at all."
GOFORIT10
"...agree that people are different. I do not think that the CI is for everyone but I strongly believe that parents have the right to choose...You obviously were able to make a choice...what about those who would like to have a CI...?"
